Artist Henri Matisse once stated that "the future of art is light."
Nowhere is this statement more true than in the light paintings created for The Winston-Salem Light Project 2008: A Celebration of Light and Art.
Conceived to powerfully demonstrate the importance of light as an artistic medium in our urban contexts, The Winston-Salem Light Project 2008 has students from The University of North Carolina School of the Arts applying light to the Millennium Center with inspiration provided by the work of significant artists.
Ten unique interpretations will cycle across the classical facade with the three-dimensional form of the architecture acting as a foil to the student’s own creativity.
Technology today permits the abundant and potential misuse of colored light in our nighttime environments. The Winston-Salem Light Project 2008 beautifully demonstrates that a strong concept using color can transcend the garish or kitsch.
Taking place over three consecutive evenings, concurrent with the Piedmont Craft Fair, it is hoped that the members of the public who experience the installation will truly consider the project as art in its own right.
